Questions and Answers
Want to find out more about the sport?
Looking for leadership and team building activities that focus on unique athletics and diversity. Dragon boating is a great way for corporations and organisations to get involved in a dynamic setting. We would love to talk to you about the rich tradition of the sport and discuss how you can get involved! Please Contact Us to set up a talk.
How can I become a Sponsor?
If your corporation or organisation is interested in becoming a team sponsor, kindly Contact Us.
Races: How do I start up a team?
The following information will assist you in setting up a Corporate Dragon Boat Team. Like most other ventures, people are the keys to success.
  1. Designate a Team Manager/Captain and a Fundraising Captain
  2. Recruit your paddlers (at least 25 people, minimum 8 women)
  3. Find out as much about dragon boating as you can
  4. Read the official rules and safety regulations
  5. Complete the necessary waivers to participate
  6. Captain to meet with team and decide on possible practice times and number of practise sessions
  7. Sign up for practice times with the team coordinator
  8. The ACCA dbRacing co-ordinator will confirm your team and schedule the practice times with our coaches
  9. And, most importantly, don't forget to come up with a unique team name and to have fun!
Races: Do we need our own boat?
No. Boats are available for practice, once a confirmed booking has been made with Dragon Boats NSW Inc.
Races: Do we need our own coach?
No, a qualified coach will be provided. Each coach has a paddling background and knowledge about the intricacies of training a dragon boat team for fun and success.

Our coaches will:
  • Provide a training plan for your team captain/manager; covering basics like timing, endurance, starts and finishes building toward race weekend. How in depth the plan can be will depend on the number of practices you have.
  • Provide proper and safe boat loading/exit procedures and explain basic control & safety commands in the boat you will hear from your steersperson i.e., Hold the boat, draw, hold hard, feather, etc.
  • Provide an explanation of stroke technique.
  • Assist you in setting a bench order until you are familiar with the process.
  • Explain the components of a race; starts, race pace, powers, finish.
  • Provide an assessment of your team’s performance and progress at the end of each practice.
Races: What is the role of the Team Manager?
Managers are not usually allowed to paddle in regattas. This person is responsible for:

  • team conduct.
  • communicating and distributing team information to all team members.
  • gathering and submitting all necessary forms and waivers for the team.
  • representation at the very important race logistics meeting (only the team manager is to speak on behalf of the team members).
Races: What is the responsibility of our Team Captain?
The team captain should have the respect and support of the team members. It is your captain's responsibility to ensure that practice times are booked, all team members are aware of the practice session times and dates, and to assemble the team at the beginning of practice.

The captain should keep a log of previous practice specifics to update your coach; note health risks of crew members, preferred commands and start procedures to the coach.
Races: What do we we bring?
Paddlers will be provided with paddles and Personal Floatation Devices (PFD, a.k.a. life jackets), if needed, during the practice.

We advise that each paddler brings a bottle of drinking water, and note that some paddlers may wish to wear paddling gloves.
Races: Who pays the race entry fee?
Most entry fees are paid by the participating team's company. However, some teams raise the entry fee on their own through sponsorships.
Races: Do we need to practise?
Practice is the name of the game. You have got to PRACTICE, even if your team is only in it just for fun. Trust us when we say, you will have more fun if you practice. We encourage that teams have at LEAST 4 practice sessions before race day. Each practice is usually one hour unless other arrangements are made.
Races: How many people do we need to form a dragon boat team?
A full dragon boat team consists of 22 people: 20 paddlers, 1 drummer (who keeps the beat of the stroke), and 1 steer-person (provided by the Festival). We generally suggest that each team have 3 alternates as well in case someone unexpectedly drops out. A minimum of 8 from each gender must participate.
Races: Where can I find more information?
