Chinese New Year Corporate Races, 2006.
Caltex dragon boat crew!

Dragon Boat Racing is for you if you are a corporate team who wants to venture beyond the limits of a volleyball court or a golf course and challenge yourself in a vibrant new way.

Whether you want your corporate dragon boat team prepared for a fun ‘come and try it’ activity or a spectacular racing event, our qualified staff will provide all the dragon boat coaching, training and equipment your group needs for an exciting team experience. We work with both first-time novices or experienced dragon boaters to safely improve their dragon boat technique.

We strive to ensure that each participant understands how to practice safely so they and their team mates do not inadvertently harm themselves or each other. Safe practice includes not only water safety but also safe physical training to minimize injury or avoid aggravating a pre-existing body injury or condition.

Every person who participates in dragon boat racing comes to the sport with a different level of physical ability, body awareness, coordination, strength, mental focus and determination.

Each participant should expect a certain degree of physical and mental challenge from the training in order to help improve their understanding of the sport. The reward from your achievements will be worth it!

What is Dragon Boating? Print

What is dragon boating?

The traditional boats used in most modern day events are 12 meters in length, constructed of solid teak and weigh approximately 1500 lbs. They are propelled by 20 paddlers, guided by a Steersperson and kept in rhythm by a drummer seated at the bow of the boat, maintaining a steady, and powerful pace for the duration of the traditional 500 meter course.

A sheer strength advantage in each individual paddler rarely results in victory. Teamwork combined with a good strength to weight ratio is the key. Well coordinated female and mixed crews routinely defeat all-male crews.

Each race takes approx. 2.5 min., but heats are run every 12-15 min. allowing for teams to load and unload their boats. Boats race in heats of 4 to 6 boats across. Total team work and a little spirit of competition make each race exciting!

Above all dragon boat racing is great fun. It is extremely user friendly and anyone, young or old, at any fitness level can quickly adapt to and develop a passion for this sport.

Many companies and community organizations have found that the social atmosphere, and the team building aspect of dragon boat racing is a valuable tool to assist employees and employers to interact in a friendly and constructive manner outside of the workplace. This translates well when returning to the office in improved efficiency of staff, and better intra-office communications leading up to and subsequent to the Festival weekend. Pride of accomplishment, working together with a common goal, and pride in representing your company are comments that have been heard from past participants in many cities.

What people have said:

The dragon boat practices and race day events are a great way for any staff to meet and have fun with each other outside of work.

Whether it's putting together a team, sponsoring the event, or just watching from shore, we'd love to help you out, this dragon boat season... click here, to contact us!
