Preparing for water training!

Here are some useful tips to get you prepared:

15 minute - Team Stretch
Prior to entering the boat, the team stretches together. Performing dragon boat specific stretches helps to prepare your body for the exercise, and helps to prevent injury.

1 hour – Water Practice
The teams board their dragon boats sharply on the hour – don’t be late. The coaches will have set the lineup, and let everyone know where to sit on the boat. On the water, the coaches will conduct drills to improve our technique and practice key elements of the race.

15 minute – Team Stretch and Announcements
Your body will appreciate the post-workout stretch – especially the day after. We also use this time to provide any team updates or make any announcements.

Clothing
Wearing the right clothing is important for an enjoyable dragon boat experience. In the cooler months, waterproof outer layers and warm inner layers are essential. In summer, dry fit tops will keep you cool and dry. Make no mistake – you will get wet during practice!

Other items to bring:
- Towel
- Change of clothing
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Bottle of water

handsHarassment or abuse in sport can have devastating effects not only for the individuals involved, but also for the sporting organisation. Underpinning the Harassment Free Sport Strategy is a network of trained Member Protection Officers (MPO’s). MPOs are nominated by state sporting organisations and supported by the Office for Recreation and Sport, which maintains a database of all the trained MPOs and mediators.

The governing body for our sport in NSW is Dragon Boats NSW Inc. and they have made it compulsory for each affiliated club member to appoint a Member Protection Information Officer (MPIO) to assist them administer their policy and to take responsibility for all club related member protection issues.

The member protection information officer role involves:

  • listening
  • providing support (but not taking over)
  • providing information and options about what a person might do (but not advise)
  • supporting the complainant in taking the matter further if that is what the complainant wants and the officer feels able to do it
  • keeping up-to-date with information on harassment, discrimination and other forms of inappropriate behaviour
  • understanding their sport’s policies and procedures in relation to harassment and discrimination
  • being accessible, approachable and able to maintain confidentiality

The A.C.C.A Member Protection Information Officer (MPIO) aims to ensure that everyone associated with our club - including players, administrators, coaches, instructors and mentors - can participate in activities in an environment free from inappropriate behaviours such as harassment, discrimination or abuse.

The MPIO is your first point of contact for any enquiries, concerns or complaints about harassment and abuse. The MPIO will not not investigate complaints or resolve conflicts but will help you to deal with what has happened.

If you have a concern or complaint and are not sure who to contact, you can use the Australian Sports Commission's complaints and contacts flowchart.
