Term Definition
AttentionAlso known as: Paddles Up or Paddles In.
 
Back PaddlingPaddle the boat backwards.
 
Brace the boatRest the shaft of your paddle on the gunwale and the blade flat on the water to give the boat extra stability.
Also known as: Paddles Flat.
 
Draw strokes leftLean out to the left side and pull perpendicular to the boat.
Also known as: Draw Left
 
Draw strokes rightLean out to the right side and pull perpendicular to the boat.
Also known as: Draw Right
 
EasyStop paddling. This command usually follows a call of “on the next stroke” and is called on the last stroke the sweep wants you to paddle.
 
Easy brakePut about half the blade in the water to take some run off the boat.
Also known as: Slow the Boat
 
Go!Begin paddling.
 
Hard up against the sideMake sure you are sitting with your hip pressed against the gunwale.
 
Lean out leftLean out to the left side to balance the draw strokes on the right side.
 
Lean out rightLean out to the right side to balance the draw strokes on the left side.
 
Let it runStop paddling.
 
Paddlers, are you ready?Snap forward and twist, paddle just above the water, top arm high and straight.
 
Paddles Behind, GoPaddle the boat backwards.
 
Paddles flatRest the shaft of your paddle on the gunwale and the blade flat on the water to give the boat extra stability.
Also known as: Brace the Boat.
 
Paddles inBlade buried in the water, ready for the first stroke, top arm high and straight.
 
Paddles UpStarting paddle position. Snap forward and twist, paddle just above the water, top arm high and straight.
 
Push off leftPush the boat away from whatever is on the left side of the boat.
 
Push off rightPush the boat away from whatever is on the right side of the boat.
 
Push strokes leftPush out to the left, perpendicular to the boat.
 
Push strokes rightPush out to the right, perpendicular to the boat.
 
ReadySnap forward and twist, paddle just above the water, top arm high and straight.
 
Ready to back paddlePaddle the boat backwards.
 
Slow the boatPut about half the blade in the water to take some run off the boat.
Also known as: Easy Brake
 
StopStop the boat. Stopping requires backwards strokes.
