Harassment or abuse in sport can have devastating effects not only for the individuals involved, but also for the sporting organisation. Underpinning the Harassment Free Sport Strategy is a network of trained Member Protection Officers (MPO’s). MPOs are nominated by state sporting organisations and supported by the Office for Recreation and Sport, which maintains a database of all the trained MPOs and mediators.
The governing body for our sport in NSW is Dragon Boats NSW Inc. and they have made it compulsory for each affiliated club member to appoint a Member Protection Information Officer (MPIO) to assist them administer their policy and to take responsibility for all club related member protection issues.
|
The member protection information officer role involves:
- listening
- providing support (but not taking over)
- providing information and options about what a person might do (but not
advise)
- supporting the complainant in taking the matter further if
that is what the complainant wants and the officer feels able to do
it
- keeping up-to-date with information on harassment,
discrimination and other forms of inappropriate behaviour
- understanding their sport’s policies and procedures in relation to
harassment and discrimination
- being accessible, approachable and
able to maintain confidentiality

The A.C.C.A Member Protection Information Officer (MPIO) aims to ensure that everyone associated with our club - including players, administrators, coaches, instructors and mentors - can participate in activities in an environment free from inappropriate behaviours such as harassment, discrimination or abuse.
The MPIO is your first point of contact for any enquiries, concerns or complaints about harassment and abuse. The MPIO will not not investigate complaints or resolve conflicts but will help you to deal with what has happened.
If you have a concern or complaint and are not sure who to contact, you can use the Australian Sports Commission's complaints and contacts flowchart.
